GALLOD GWILYM

Image 10 of 42

GALLOD GWILYM LOM (*Nebo Joules x Gallod Rosie Mai) became part of our family because my mom, Polly Petersen, wanted more chestnut cobs. The year was 2006 and the AGM was in Orlando, the home of Walt Disney World. One phone call to Susan Stepney led out entire extended family on a trip into Florida countryside. After an eternity of driving and some lost faith in our fearless leader we came to Gwil’s home. Lisa McFarland greeted us at the barn, gave a warning about fire ants and out Gwil came. He was a stallion in all his glory at three years old. He pranced, reared on his hind legs and bucked. He won my heart. Ann Petersen broke my gentle giant to ride and drive. After a year Ann had more Welsh to show so I offered to ride Gwil in Western Pleasure classes. I had not ridden in a show ring for more than 20 years. Well we stayed upright to the amazement of many that know me. Each year we get a little better and now we drive. My daughter Hannah also rides Gwil. She doesn’t often think of him as a gentle giant for he is a year younger. I smile anyhow for Gwil reminds me of a little grade draft pony from my youth called Willie. When I want to get my sister’s goat I just call Gwil “Gwillie”. Hannah may struggle but when they are synchronized they can’t be beat. They have many more years together. He has a permanent home next to Griff who may actually retire in 15 years.
